Carlton Design, acting as consultant to the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corporation is helping to develop a Forest Stewardship Plan for approximately 18,000 acres of forest in the New Jersey Highlands.  The New Jersey Audubon Society is the lead consultant on the project providing forestry expertise.  Carlton Design is helping to design the plan, to refine the stakeholder meeting process, research carbon markets and to develop economic markets for Highlands wood products.  The plan will strive to create a healthy mix of older and younger trees and a mix of

shrubs usually not seen in New Jersey forests due to invasive plants and deer browsing. In order to create environmentally sustainable forest systems it will be necessary to recreate economic systems to responsibly harvest and use timber.  The Plan has the potential to have an annual impact on the region’s greenhouse gasses by sequestering approximately one to one and one half tons of carbon per acre.
